Adventurer
"I am not an adventurer not by choice but by fate."
Vincent Van Gogh to Horace Mann Livens, Paris, September/October 1886, letter 569
Compared to the Quotes previously used on this blog, this was literally written in English. Here he describes the pattern of his life. Julian Bell writes "Choice is for the free, who are able to push themselves forward. Fate is for the shackled, who get pushed from behind." (63)
I believe that life can't be controlled by fate, not completely. Fate might be what's bound to happen because of what you choose to do in life, but living your life relying on one single single answer won't do. Just like how Bell says that "Fate is for the shackled," following the path of the fate that you did't create out of you own efforts isn't necessary. As long as you work hard and believe in what you do, you're about bound to success.
Some people work their butts off and in the end, their efforts are throw down the drain. Some people don't even have to lift an eyelid and people will flock to them and have all the glory. Vincent Van Gogh can be categorized as the man who did what he loved exceptionally well, but was ignored so hard, he was practically the bottom corner of a room.
So this week, I have a question: Do you believe in working hard for your future? Do you think it's fair that some people just aren't rewarded for their efforts?
